The annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Gospel reading of the day. Mary, listening to the message from angel Gabriel, asks a question, “How can it be?” We heard a similar incident in the Gospel passage of yesterday where Zechariah asked angel the question, “How can I be sure of this?” Both questions are similar, but the response of the angel is completely different. While Mary is given an explanation, the priest is communicated of a punishment that would last at least for ten months.
The difference in response lies in the difference in knowledge. Mary, a poor young girl can be given an explanation for the doubts, but a priest who knows and who should have known God’s ways (from the history of Israel – in detail) cannot be tolerated for the unbelief. Dear brethren, more and more we know Jesus, more and more we have the obligation to live by what we know. It is not the hearers, rather the doers who would inherit the kingdom of heaven.
Prayer: Lord, makes us the doers of the Word, Amen.
