13 January, 2018: Past is Past

Saturday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
Reading: 1 Sam. 9. 1-4, 17-19, 10.1Gospel: Mk 2:13-17
In the Gospel today we have Jesus who invites Matthew, a tax collector to follow him and goes on to dine with him. Then he goes on to explain that he did not come to call the righteous, but sinners. This is a clear example to say that our past does not matter to Jesus when he invites us to follow him. He (Matthew) who seemed to be far from holiness becomes a model of acceptance of God’s mercy. With a humble and sincere heart let us acknowledge our sins, respond generously to his loving call. May our familiarity with Jesus give us courage to say ‘No’ to activities disapproved by God.
