Readings: Sir 48:1-4, 9-11, Mt 17:9a, 10-13

In the gospel passage of the day Jesus speaks about the failure of the scribes to comprehend the arrival of Elijah amidst them. He says, “I tell you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him.” Similarly, when the Son of God came on earth they failed to recognize him and crucified him. The long-awaited Messiah was in front of them, but they were not ready to accept him.

In our life too, there are numerous occasions God coming to interact with us, to pull us to the right path and help us move towards the amazing plan he has in mind for us. It might happen that we fail to realise any of these. Let us at least hope and pray that the second coming of Jesus too might not become a surprise of that sort. Let our eyes be opened to recognize the Messiah present in our liturgy, relationships, ordinariness of our daily life, etc.

Prayer: My Jesus, let me recognize you, Amen.
