Lord give me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things that I can and to know the difference between the two.

Serenity is a gift that does not come as a result of not having problems or is a prerequisite for having a life that is fulfilling. It is the ability to see reality in perspective according to one’s idea of oneself, God and others.

In today’s readings we can see how Jesus through the parable, how the act of an enemy causes the servants to react to it in trying to remedy the situation. But the master understands how such an action can only harm him in the long run and decides to act in serenity. He chooses to wait until the time is right.

How often our choices have been dictated by the urge to bandage situations and to satisfy our egos that we have control over situations that surround us. The unwillingness to allow the Lord to work through the situation and in serenity trust in him is truly a spiritual milestone. Weakness before someone who dislikes us is something we find so difficult to accept. Serenity in weakness is a call to allow Jesus to be the power that works in us. This power does not necessarily lead us to overcome the other but to allow God’s kingdom to come to fruition through it.

May the Lord grant us the desire be serene when things don’t go as we wish and allow him to guide our actions. Let us make the serenity prayer our own.

Lord give me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things that I can and to know the difference between the two.
