Thursday of 34th Week in Ordinary Time

Reading: Rom. 10. 9 – 18; Gospel: Mt. 4. 18 – 22.

In today’s gospel we see the call of the first disciples Peter and Andrew and the sons of Zebedee, James and John. Jesus calls them saying that he would make them fishers of men. Hearing that, without giving a second thought, leaving out everything, they follow Jesus. What does it mean to immediately respond to the call of Jesus?

There are two things that are involved here; the first is that these four men were able to see the holiness in the person of Christ and so were able to see the holiness in the person of Christ and so were able to take a decision and they were sure that following Jesus is going to change their life completely. So the question for us today is very simple. Are we able to find the holiness in the person of Christ? We have heard a lot about him and often we feel proud for being born into and brought up as Christian. But the problem is, have we ever realized the sacredness or the holiness in the person of Christ? If the answer is no, then we must seriously think about our life as Christians, and it is time for us to hit refresh and seriously think about him.

Secondly, achieving the first stage takes us to the challenge that is offered by Jesus: a call to holiness. It is not only meant for priests or the religious but it is for the people of all the walks of life. The way to attain holiness is very simple: leave out everything and follow him. In this postmodern world are we ready to accept the challenges of Christ and are we ready to leave out everything and follow him fully?
