30 Dec 2016: Let Us Be United In Love

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Reading 1: Sir 3:2-6, 12-14; Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5; Mt 2:13-15, 19-23

The Gospel reading of today enumerates to us that the words of the prophets are being fulfilled in Jesus Christ: Jesus is called from Egypt and Jesus becomes a Nazarene. The person who discerns the plans of God to bring to fulfilment the words of Christ is St. Joseph. He is described in Scriptures as the righteous man. Hence, righteousness is a necessary quality to discern the ways of God. Discerning the plans of Gods is the only reason for us to be proud of. Prophet Jeremiah beautifully speaks the words of God thus:

“Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth; but let those who boast, boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the LORD; I act with steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the LORD.” (Jer 9: 23,24)

Following the commandments of the Lord is the easiest way to become righteous.

Today we celebrate the Holy Family day. Taking that little family of Nazareth as our model, we are all invited to become persons united with authentic love. When love abounds our families become places of communion. When love abounds our relationships become deeper. When love abounds the meaning for our life becomes stronger. And when love abounds God’s blessings and graciousness is experienced for ever and ever. The first reading too lists the blessings reserved for one who honours his/her parents: the sins are expiated, the fortune is amassed, a happy family is formed, prayers are heard, and long life is assured. Let us realize the greatness of life and love in the family. May God give us the grace that our families become more united in love that knows no limits.
