Wednesday of the 34th Week in Ordinary Time
Today’s gospel passage affirms the persecutions the disciples of Jesus will have to face on account of his name. However, the Lord promises words and wisdom that none of the opponents can withstand or contradict (21:15): and continued protection; Jesus says, “…not a hair of your head will perish” (21: 18). The first reading from the book of Daniel proves that the promises are not vague but, a reality. The reading proves how Daniel who resolved not defile himself ( Dan. 1:8) was specially protected and was given wisdom and understanding more than anybody else. (Dan. 1:21).
It is also true in the experience of very many Christians who have stood firm in the proclamation of the Lord. Every experience of persecution is an experience of strengthening in the faith, Kanadamal being one of the closest example for us. The question placed before us today is, do we really trust in the Lord or in our limited intellectual knowledge? The attitude of joy, calm courage, perseverance and fortitude will be a testimony to our trust in the Lord when we face adverse circumstances.
