27 April 2018: I am the Way, the Truth and the Life

Friday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Reading: Acts. 13:26-33;  Gospel: Jn. 14: 1-6

I am the way,  the Truth and the Life ( Jn 14/6a)

One of the most indispensable needs of civil and social life today is the possession of a document that establishes one’s identity.  Probably the most universal of these is the passport which every country issues to its citizens. Then we have the voter identity card, as also other social security numbers and documents. A rather recent development we have all witnessed is the id card everyone loves to flaunt,  be it a kindergarten child or  IT engineer, a police officer or Intelligence department official.

More than possessing a valid document as proof of one’s social identity, self-knowledge at the deepest level, as to one’s personal identity and mission in life is vital for a happy a happy and fruitful life. For effective leaders, this is all the more necessary.  Jesus, the most effective leader of humanity, lived in deep awareness of his true self-identity.

The Gospel according to  St. John, as we know, is unique in many ways, different from the Synoptic Gospels. One of the special treasures of the Johannine Gospel is the I am sayings of Jesus.  More profoundly than any other human being,  Jesus lived in ever-deepening awareness of his identity and mission in life.   St. John has recorded several of them.  I am the light  ( 8/12, 9/5 ),  I am the Good Shepherd (Jn 10/11), I am the Bread of Life ( Jn 6/35) are some of the best-known sayings of Jesus.

Today Jesus assures us I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. A very profound assurance indeed.  This assurance, like the other profound I am statements, cannot be intellectually grasped but are to be believed in. So praying over them is more significant than reflecting over them. Therefore, today, could we spend a few moments in silence just listening to Jesus assuring each one of us I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.  Or better still,  just ‘mirror’ these words back to Jesus and profess our faith Lord Jesus by repeating from the depths of our being:  “Lord Jesus you are the Way, the Truth and the Life.”
