Monday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1: Ex. 14: 5-18; Gospel: Mt. 12: 38-42

We are living in a  world where life to a great extent is controlled by signs and symbols. The aspect of trust is no more the matter of the heart rather they are measured by the external signs. To purchase something we look for the brand sign/name of the product. To make a relationship often we look for external signs of beauty, wealth etc. Do all these signs really give us true meaning for our  lives? In the human point of view they prove which all of us seek for. When met with difficulty and disappointment we ask God for help and relief from it. When we enjoy a happy life we ask God for more of it. But the Gospel of today gives us a new message, when covered with darkness of disappointment ask God for more of it so that the stars in us will shine more brightly.

What does Jesus invite us to do. Instead of looking for the sign ‘ be the sign’. Be the sign of hope and love.  Be the sign of hope and love where there is disappointment and hatred. Be the sign of compassion where there is injustice. We are the tongue  and we are the voice of God. Let us pledge ourselves to be the sign of God’s love and compassion.
