21 September, 2017: Call to Intimacy

Feast of St. Matthew the Evangelist.

Reading 1: Eph 4: 1-7, 11-13; Gospel: Mt 9: 9-13.

The Mother Church celebrates the feast of St. Matthew the apostle. In the gospel we see when Jesus called Matthew; he left everything behind and followed him without delay. In today’s world wouldn’t we consider Matthew as crazy, just walking away giving up everything believing in words of Jesus “Follow me”. All those sitting with him at the customs office must have definitely called him crazy. But Matthew was convinced of following Jesus knowing what he was supposed to do and what would happen to him. Jesus drew him into the circle of his intimate friends and he became part of them. This conversion of Matthew changed the world. As we read the gospel we hear the call in our own hearts to move out of egoistic life and enter into intimate relationship with Jesus. Only then the call of Jesus goes deeper, challenging us to join him in changing the world. Are we ready? Are we crazy enough to venture more and more to carry on the mission of Jesus?
