19 June 2019: Know one’s own self

Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: 2 Cor 9:6-11:Gospel Mt.6: 1-6, 16-18

The purpose of our spiritual journey is seeking the Lord, to have an intimate encounter with him and be with him forever. This journey is not an easy task. It is said that the most difficult journey is the journey that one makes within. Spiritual journey is also a journey within. Searching God who is present in our inmost being. Usually we go for pilgrimages; Pilgrimage is an outward journey, in view of seeking God experience. However, the real pilgrimage is the pilgrimage that a person makes within. In this journey, a person comes to know one’s own self and this awareness helps that person to surrender one’s weakness to the mercy of God. The greatest danger that can come into our spiritual life if we are not careful is that of exhibitionism and self-righteousness. In today’s gospel, Christ clearly tells us that the practices of piety are not meant for exhibitionism rather for growing in one’s love for God. The religious people of Jesus’ time thought that the fulfillment of certain requirements is the most important factor in spiritual life. However, Christ clearly says that it is not the fulfillment of the law but what matters is the disposition of one’s own heart. Jesus exhorts that your left hand shouldn’t know what your right hand is doing, pray in secret, be cheerful on the day of fasting etc. By doing so our life becomes more meaningful and authentic. Ultimately, spirituality is a relationship with God; He knows each and every thought of our hearts. Therefore, we need not worry about what others think about our spiritual life or trying to present ourselves as spiritual beings by performing meaningless gestures. Let us be persons of authentic interior life since God loves us as we are…
