18 September, 2017: The Flowering of Faith in the Soil of Humility .

Monday of the Twenty fourth week in ordinary time.

Reading 1: 1 Tim 2: 1-8; Gospel: Lk 7: 1-10.

Every believer is God’s miracle and we can see this truth in the Roman military officer. The famous statement of the centurion “I am not worthy to have you under my roof” has been the part of the Eucharistic celebration over the centuries. The centurion on the one hand is conscious of his unworthiness and at the same time his faith in Jesus’ healing power is so great, that he knows that one word from Jesus – even from a distance – will cure his servant. Jesus contrasts the centurion’s faith with that of the Jews. What if Jesus today contrast our faith and more importantly our humility with that of the centurion, where would we stand as Christians? “Humility is truth” said St. Theresa of Avila. Let us recognize our unworthiness before God and call out to him in faith. Let us ask God to heal us of our hubris so that we become true messengers of good news.
