Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist

Reading 1: 2 Tim 4:10-17; Gospel: Lk 10:1-9

It is very common especially in the religious life that one receives obedience from the superior or in other words the superior gives the members of the religious order a new ministry or assignment where they can continue the mission or start a new mission as per the needs of the place and congregation. In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus giving His disciples the obedience to continue His mission. Let us cull out some of the important steps in this missionary expedition.

  1. The Choice

Jesus Himself chose and appointed his disciples to be the partakers of His mission and he sends them ahead of Him to those places where He Himself intended to go. Like John the Baptist, our mission is to prepare the way for the Lord.

  1. Prayer

Jesus before sending them asks them to pray. If we look into the life of Jesus we can see that He has always prayed to His Father especially during important moments in His life. Jesus gives us a new insight to choose prayer as our constant companion in the journey of life.

  1. The Sending

Jesus is sending us like lambs into the midst of wolves. Why Jesus is so cruel to send us into this dangerous situation? We have the answer in today’s first reading: ‘the Lord stood by me and gave me strength’ (2 Tim 4:17). We need to remember that when Jesus sends us He also comes with us.

  1. Dos and Don’ts

Jesus instructs them very clearly what to do and what not to do. The main core of the mission given by Jesus can be summarized as “the Kingdom of God has come near”. Jesus expects each one of us to be the doers of the word than merely being the hearers of the word so that through us the world may know and experience the Kingdom of God. It may not be possible to practice all the dos and don’ts given by Jesus, but we can do one thing for sure, that is, to proclaim the Kingdom of God by our words and lives.

Dear friends every day we are given a mission. Jesus sends us every day with a mission to fulfill. Often we don’t realize it. Let us hearken to the voice of the Lord and do His will so that His kingdom can be established here on earth.
