Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
The Gospel of the day speak of the immediate response of the first disciples. Jesus’ compelling invitation to follow him as a disciple is the initial step toward sending missionaries into the world as fishers of men (Mt. 28: 18-20). However, Christ chooses men of modest education to demonstrate to the world that the wisdom of the gospel stems directly from God and not the ingenuity of men.
The acceptance of the call evokes an abrupt break with family, livelihood and everything they had. (The mention of hired servants suggests that Zebedee and his sons were prosperous in their fishing enterprise.) The impulse to abandon everything for the greatest treasure, Jesus, should be the excelling character of every Christian disciple even today.
The challenge placed before us is to realize how detached are we to attach ourselves completely to Christ.
