Wednesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
There is a well-made movie with a great plot line which had a remarkable entry in Hollywood and captured the hearts of many entitled “inside-out”, an animation movie, which gives us a true portrait of a young girl who has a wonderful life until her family moves to San Francisco and her emotions get out of control….emotions like disgust, anger, fear, sadness, etc,. and that takes control of her life. What was lurking within her, found a place outside of her very self.
In today’s gospel, Jesus says that ‘it is what comes out of a person that defiles a person not what goes inside a person. The explanation suggests a distinction between the inner person and the outer person, and the combination of both will have a vital influence in a person. Normally when we speak of evil, we do not say that it stems from within but we say that it is out there embodied in something or someone else. But Jesus, in today’s gospel evidently says that it’s from the human heart that the evil intentions come, meaning to say that the heart becomes the source of action. Therefore the words of Jesus urge us, a protecting, a guarding and a shielding of inner self…and thus filling the heart with goodness so that a spring, a well of goodness may spill over and create a better “inside-out”.
