Wednesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1: 2 Tm 1: 1-3, 6-12; Gospel: Mk. 12: 18-27

“Is it not the reason you are mistaken that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God?” is the question Jesus is raising to the Sadducees in the Gospel reading of the day. Will He ask the same question to us looking at what we do? Let us reflect.

One who does not understand the Scriptures or the power of God will be worried about what is not worth. The worry of Sadducees was to trap Jesus. But, this would never contribute to their salvation or that of the others listening to what they ask. Rather, this would increase enmity, bring forth confusion and hinder the spiritual growth of everyone around. This ignorance (of the Scriptures and the power of God) is opposed by Jesus with a firm statement: “You are totally wrong.”

Hoping that Jesus will not state the same to us, let us turn to the first reading of the day that describes how the life of a person who understands the Scriptures and the power of God will be:

  • S/He will rekindle the gift of God that is within every day
  • S/He will not be ashamed of testifying to God
  • S/He will not be ashamed of suffering for the Lord
  • S/He will do his share in labouring for the gospel
  • S/He will realise that his/her faith life is not the result of the merits but of the generosity and initiative of God
  • S/He knows in whom s/he has believed and will continue to run the race
  • S/He will be convinced that God will take care of everything until that day

Let our faith life bear testimony to the fact that we understand the Scriptures and the power of God. Let us bear witness to Christ Jesus under all circumstances. Let us not be worried of what is not worth that God may not tell us on the last day: “You are totally wrong.”
